Speed™ Gold Standard 810-nm Laser Diode and NIR™ Deep Thermal Heating Technologies Yield Faster Treatment Times

The Soprano XLi uses Speed™ 810-nm diode laser technology, the gold standard in laser hair removal. Unlike earlier systems, however, the Soprano XLi’s energy penetrates deep into the dermis where the hair follicle is located, delivering high average power and a rapid 10 pulse-per-second repetition rate.

The efficiency of the Soprano XLi hair removal hand piece is highlighted by its featured 12×10 mm diameter and 10 Hz repetition rate. The sweeping technique eliminates skipped spots often left by single pulsed lasers. This comprehensive coverage translates to smooth results and a virtually painless experience.

The near-infrared (NIR) module provides uniform energy distribution with a huge 18cm2 spot size that gradually stimulates deep dermal heating and emits controlled energy in the infrared spectrum to safely and effectively restore skin laxity and improve muscle and joint pain. The design of the NIR handle allows for further efficiency as it covers larger surface areas for amazingly quick and painless treatments.

IN-Motion™ and SHR™ Technologies Provide Virtually Painless Treatments

The diode 810-nm module and the Near-Infrared (NIR) deep thermal heating treatment hand pieces are equipped with IN-Motion™ technology to deliver uniform energy distribution that produces dramatic, yet comfortable, deep dermal heating without damage to the epidermis. The IN-Motion™ and the CW Pulse™ technologies provide a breakthrough in patient comfort, speed of procedures, and repeatable clinical results.

The SHR™ energy pulses gradually heat the follicles in the skin’s sub dermal layer with controlled wavelengths The high average power, low fluency, high repetition rate SHR™ mode pulses slowly increase the temperature of the hair follicle containing the cells responsible for hair regrowth. By constantly moving the hand piece during treatment, the energy is delivered safely and uniformly, eliminating skipped spots and ensuring patient comfort.

Alma Lasers’ unique IN-Motion™ technology combines concurrent cooling with a gradual thermal rise to the target’s therapeutic temperature, without the risk of injury and with much less pain for the patient. This is in contrast to the high peak energies used in traditional photo epilation technology that require high cooling before, during and after each pulse, and require that the hand piece remain stationary during the energy delivery. The sweeping technique of IN-Motion™ technology enables continuous administration in a larger treatment area for increased comfort and fewer missed spots.

A low fluence rate for IN-Motion™ makes the Soprano XLi unique for both laser hair removal and dermal heating. Instead of simply blasting unwanted hair, the Soprano XLi gradually heats hair follicles to the appropriate damage point without causing discomfort or longer treatment times. The sweeping technique of IN-Motion™ technology enables continuous administration in a larger treatment area for increased comfort and fewer missed spots.

CW Pulse™ and DualChill™ Technologies Generate Additional Cooling and Minimize Discomfort

Using CW Pulse™ technology, the Soprano XLi allows for more homogeneous energy distribution and more effective fluence to be delivered with improved patient comfort. Cooling for the Soprano XLi comes from the sapphire DualChill™ tip. In addition to the comfort achieved by the IN-Motion™ technology, DualChill™ makes it even more comfortable, virtually eliminating the need for analgesics. DualChill™ technology helps preserve the epidermis and allows high  fluences for any given skin type. The Soprano XLi is exclusively fitted with a high-tech DualChill™ contact cooling system, plus an integrated adapter for Zimmer Cryo 5 Contact Thermo-electric Cooling (TEC) for maximum comfort and results. The maintenance of the temperature of the skin surface ensures comfort throughout treatments and minimizes the risks of immediate and long-term side effects.

How It Functions

The word laser, in this context, is an acronym for light amplification by stimulated emission of non-toxic radiation. Administered at low fluence levels on the electromagnetic spectrum, the wavelengths that the Soprano XLi utilizes are monochromatic, coherent, and collimated. This advanced laser and light source uses the principle of selective photothermolysis to eliminate hair and its potential regrowth without damaging the surrounding skin. Selective photothermolysis functions by delivering energy by photons to penetrate the outermost layer of the skin, this minimal absorption by the epidermis targets hair follicles and gradually heats hair shafts without damaging the surrounding skin tissue. During a laser hair removal treatment, minimally invasive and controlled light passes through the skin and is absorbed by the melanin in the hair shaft. This absorption raises the temperature of the hair follicle and thermally destroys the cells responsible for regrowth. The attributes of the light (wavelength, pulse duration, and power) are altered to fit the profile of individual clients and ensure damage to these cells and not to the rest of the skin.

For hair removal, the Soprano XLi uses a gold standard 810 nm diode laser and combines it with exclusive IN-Motion™ technology. Low fluences of up to 20 J/cm2 penetrate deep into the dermis at a high repetition rate of 10 pulses-per-second to deliver high average power. By gradually heating the dermis to a temperature that damages the hair follicles, re-growth is prevented while cooling from the sapphire tip and the DualChill™ technology protects the epidermis from overheating.

For skin tightening, the Soprano XLi is equipped with the near-infrared (NIR) module, which provides deep dermal heating with an 18cm2 pot size specially designed to uniformly distribute heat within the proper therapeutic range and avoid the risk of adverse effects. This unipolar treatment improves skin elasticity by generating alternating electromagnetic fields that provide effective deep dermal thermotherapy. This painless non-invasive treatment offers long lasting results by stimulating the production of collagen and improving skin texture.

Selective Photothermolysis

One of the benefits of laser treatment over other modalities of treatment, such as intense pulsed light (IPL), is the specificity of laser treatment. Selective photothermolysis is the principle that allows lasers to be used to target a specific area in the skin with minimal or no disruption to the surrounding normal skin tissue. For selective photothermolysis to be successful, the laser wavelength must be highly attracted to the target, the target must dissipate heat slower than the surrounding skin, therefore accumulating heat from the laser, and the laser wavelength must be able to penetrate down to the level of the excess hair follicles, thereby targeting the source without causing any damage to the normal skin tissue.

Laser Safety

The Soprano XLi is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), an agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, and cleared by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), a non-governmental agency made of trade associations, technical societies, and professional groups and customer organizations that have developed recommended standards for laser safety. The Soprano XLi emits non-toxic radiation at minimal levels to target hair follicles without damaging healthy skin tissue. This advanced laser technology exceeds the standards outlined by the FDA, under its surgical, infrared, and laser classifications, and the ANSI under publication ANSI Z136.3.

The FDA has officially cleared the Soprano XLi hair removal diode laser system (K052874), the Soprano XLi multi-application platform (K083848), and the NIR module (K080318). The approval outlines that the Soprano XLi Diode Laser Module is safe for use for hair removal and long-term hair reduction, as well as for the treatment of benign vascular and pigmented lesions, while the NIR Module is indicated to elevate tissue temperature for skin tightening, as well as the temporary relief of minor muscle pain and joint pain and stiffness, the temporary relief of minor joint pain associated with arthritis, the temporary increase in local circulation where applied, and the relaxation of muscle spasms, minor sprains and strains, and minor muscular pain. Furthermore, the clearance clarifies that the Soprano XLi system is indicated for use on all skin types (Fitzpatrick Skin Types I-VI), including tanned skin.
